Whereas the first two games in the series offered a more gritty, realistic tone, Resistance 3 embraces the scarier side of warfare, resulting in a tense but explosive experience. The plot in Resistance 3 is a direct continuation of Resistance 2, but features a new protagonist named Joseph Capelli. Still locked in a brutal war against the Chimera, hostile aliens who have arrived on Earth with a vengeance, humanity is on the brink of extinction. Despite the advances made by humanity to rid the Earth of the Chimera, things are looking bleak.
At the start of the game, Joseph’s small group of survivors in Oklahoma are invaded by the Chimera, forcing them to flee. After learning that the Chimera has opened a massive black hole in the sky of New York City, Joseph decides to take matters into his own hands and defeat the aliens for good. His adventure takes him across five unique cities in the post-apocalyptic United States, engaging in a cross-country mission of destruction. Like the previous Resistance games, Resistance 3 is a fast-paced first-person shooter, putting players directly in the heart of the sci-fi battle.
There are 20 chapters to complete, spread across five main areas in the game. Chapters are mostly linear, tasking players with defeating every Chimera monster they see and reaching the exit alive. Along the way, you’ll encounter a range of characters, some of which will bestow you with objectives to complete. There’s a good variety of environments and level design, ensuring that things never get too repetitive.
The Resistance series has always been praised for its fun selection of guns, and Resistance 3 offers even more weaponized excitement. For fans of the previous two games, classic guns like the Magnum, Augur, Carbine, and Marksman return. These along with other returning guns offer traditional fire-power, along with a few experimental oddities.
